Metallica at Aardschokdag, IJsselhal, Zwolle, The Netherlands – 8th of February 1987.
On this festival, Metallica presented Cliff Burton's successor to the Dutch public. After many auditions with various bassists, Jason Newsted, from Flotsam & Jetsam, turned out to be the man for the job. And of course all eyes were on him that day. The newcomer was completely hermetically shielded from the Dutch press, who wanted to find out how he ended up with Metallica. And besides this, everyone was also curious about his stage performance. It was clearly noticeable that the entire entourage around the band started to become more and more professional. Well before the start of the concert, the present press photographers were summoned to the press room. After an extensive briefing with all kinds of instructions from the band’s manager and signing an entire book with all kinds of statements and regulations, we finally received our photo passes. Quite unexpectedly, Kirk Hammett entered the room and one of the present photographers wanted to take a photo. Metallica's manager immediately reprimanded not to do this, but if you did, you would be thrown out of the venue. We were only allowed to take photos in the pit …. at his command. It is logical when a band breaks through internationally that other professional matters come into play, but the fact that it became so businesslike exceeded my wildest expectations. Sometimes I think back with nostalgia to their performances in Zwaagwesteinde and Paradiso where everything happened uncomplicated and without much fuss.
