Motörhead at IJsselhal, Zwolle, The Netherlands – 22nd of November 1987
Having your roots in the New Wave of British Heavy Metal era and meeting Motörhead for an interview was something like the holy grail. The press were warmly welcomed into the specially created living room for the band, with a bar and a slot machine no less. So we got some beers and started our conversation with Animal, Würzel and Phil. Meanwhile Lemmy popped in and I had the possibility to take some group photographs. It was great fun and hilarious at the same time. A local pirate radiostation had the honour to have an interview with Lemmy. Half-way through that conversation he left the mobile radio-booth to fetch a drink. So we saw Lemmy coming in the room, saying in his deep voice “hello” to us, while walking straight to the bar to prepare his drink. Later on we spoke to those lucky radio guys and one of them told us that Lemmy was now leading a healthy lifestyle because he drank a big pint of orange juice during the interview. We started to laugh and my reporter colleague Donald Wever (Metal Europe), responded: “You didn’t see what was really in his drink”. But of course we did. “A small amount of juice was only used to top off the bottle of vodka he poured into his glass”. There are so many stories about Lemmy and everybody who ever has met him has his own tale. The legend lives on in our hearts and will never be forgotten.
