Helloise at The Ahoy Concert, Rotterdam, The Netherlands – 6th of June 1987.
Helloïse's career (see also previous post) was in motion and the band reaches the semi-finals of the “Grote Prijs van Nederland” and got signed by record company WEA. Their debut-album “Cosmogony (1985)” was recorded under the direction of producer John Sonneveld, who was known for his work with many Dutch national artists. After a short period of time and with the same production team, their follow-up album "Polarity (1986)" got released. And showed a somewhat more radio-friendly approach, which was characteristic of many bands of that time. But their more melodic Hard Rock sound did very well in the Dutch club scene where also visitors got the opportunity to buy a ticket for their self organised big event in The Ahoy, Rotterdam. I have to admit that it shows some guts to do something like that, but these gentlemen managed to fill the venue nicely. The show contained contributions/guest appearances by artists such as: Peter Strykes (Picture), Leon Goewie (Vengeance), Oz Fox and Robert Sweet of Stryper. But for the tabloid press this event was a feast, because during this concert the love between Patricia Paay (Star Sisters) and Adam Curry (Veronica DJ/US-MTV Veejay) seemed to have started, which later resulted in a sensational marriage. Times are changing and so is the record industry. The US-wing of WEA (Warner Bros) decides, due to revenue issues and the introduction of the Compact Disk (CD), to throw out all of their national artists. Other global business units must follow the same decision. Because of this the band gradually falls apart and various band members got entwined in side projects, until spring 2013 were the original members got together for a reunion show. This show at the Boerderij at Zoetermeer was the kick-off for the coming future. Some band members now perform under the name Highway Chile, but also highlight Helloïse's music during their shows. Go check them out when they're around.
