Exodus at Paradiso, Amsterdam, The Netherlands on October 28th, 1985.
Months before or should I say almost a year before the official release of the band’s debut album "Bonded by Blood", there were already copies circulating in the well-known legendary tape trading circuit. The metal underground showed its impact that evening, and for them the moment had come that everyone was waiting for. Exodus, the likely successors of Metallica was making their first appearance in the Netherlands. The band was hungry for the stage and so of course were the very excited crowd. However, it was a shame that the sound quality in the venue was very poor as it suffered from a high-frequency beep that could not be removed from the PA system. Due to the program of the main act, Exodus was forced into a shockingly short performance time of half an hour. It was short and sweet but more than enough to leave an enormous impression behind. Backstage, the present press was instructed by the Exodus tour manager not to talk about their former guitarist Kirk Hammett (Metallica). During the interview we did a good job not to mention it but the band members brought it up anyway. Not much we could do about it! To celebrate the success of their gig, our conversation partners Paul Baloff (vocals) and Gary Holt (guitar) were filled up with the necessary beers, so much so …... you can guess what it was like for the ones who came after us.... Exodus had all the reasons to drop a party. Their stunning performance made a benchmark for the future…and you will never know what that will bring…. Just have a look at Gary Holt’s T-shirt!
