Acid at Evenementenhal, Leeuwarden, The Netherlands 29th April 1984
Some bands are coming from out of nowhere. Acid from Bruges, Belgium entered the Metal scene with two full-length albums “Acid” and “Maniac” in the same year (1983). Their merciless mix of speed metal in combination with female vocals was remarkable and unique. The term female-fronted metal didn’t exist in those days, but Acid were sure one of the pioneers of that genre. Front-lady Kate was an eye-catcher and drew a lot of attention from the crowd with her stage performance. This in combination with the “take no prisoners” attitude of the other bandmembers you could simply not escape. The band started their set with some pyrotechnics and I got almost blown out of the photo-booth. After the overwhelming/outstanding show, my reporter colleguae Donald Wever had an interview with Kate and the rest of the band. Backstage we were endorsed with a couple of beers and close to the end of this meeting, guitar player Dizzy Lizzy challenged us to tell some jokes about the Belgians. At his turn, he told some about the Dutch. For those who don’t know… this is a kind of cultural thing between the two countries. This was a lot of fun, and of course… with a lot of beers. Time was flying, Donald stayed with the band and I had to leave soon to shoot the next band.
