The Sweet at Veronica’s Goud van Oud Festival, Americahal, Apeldoorn, The Netherlands – 21st of April, 1989.
Many People ask me where did it all start? My interest in the harder kind of music began when my father returned from a business trip and gave me my first 7” single, “Wig Wam Bam” by The Sweet. At the upcoming school party with a few classmates we lip-synced the chart-topping song on our homemade cardboard guitars. But the track on the B-side, called “New York Connection,” featured an opening guitar riff that was clearly more hard rock-oriented and it piqued my interest. The interest in the heavier music genre was aroused. On a weekday I went to Apeldoorn to witness the band's camera- and soundcheck for Veronica's "Goud van Oud Festival". From the original Sweet line-up, only two original band members remained, namely guitar player Andy Scott and drummer Mick Tucker. On vocals they had Paul Mario Day (ex-Iron Maiden, More and Wildfire), Phil Lanzon (ex-Grand Prix) on keyboards and former Smokie bass player Terry Uttley. The band played their between Pop and Hardrock orientated anthems tightly, including their signature vocal harmonies. However you look at it, The Sweet has undeniably left its mark and influenced many Glam- and Hair Metal bands.
