Stevie Salas Colorcode at Vredenburg, Utrecht, The Netherlands - 1st of October 1990.
The musical career of Stevie Salas as a guitarist, writer, producer and composer is too extensive to mention. At an early age he left his hometown Oceanside, California to chase his dream: a career in music. Got soon discovered by P-funk godfather George Clinton and was recruited as lead guitarist for Clinton's studio albums. Working and recording in the studio became one of his passions and Stevie got the chance to co-produce the UK hit “Out Come the Freaks” by Was (Not Was). All of this has not gone unnoticed, Rod Stewart approached him to be the lead guitarist on his sold-out 1988 stadiums tour. So Stevie jumped aboard the private jet life, and after leaving this luxurious bubble, he signed a recording contract with Island Records. Formed a band with drummer Winston Watson Jr. and bass player C.J. De Villier to record his debut album "Colorcode", which was produced by Bill Laswell in New York. In a kind of way the album stood out and contained a groovy mix of guitar-driven (Hard) Rock with an underlayer of Funk. In a sense, the United States was not ready for this, but the UK and Europe were. Salas supported the album by opening for 24-7 Spyz on their Dutch tour. “Colorcode” is a cult classic, an undiscovered gem. I play it every now and then, still a favourite.
